Title: Amazing African Children's Band
Artists: African Children
Culture: Africa
Orchestration: idiophones, voice, corpophone
Several aspects of this video immediately displayed the social hierarchy Lew and Campbell (2005) described in this week's reading. Lew and Campbell (2005) discuss children's cooperation, competition and turn taking and the importance in these social interactions have in play. I believe these aspects are beautifully displayed in this video. The children in this video have fashioned both functional and non-functional (in terms of musical actuality rather than being a "toy" representation), instruments to visually depict what they find important in a street band. Without even knowing the backstory of this musical experience, the nature of children and their natural interactions are immediately present. The older musician has the most realized instrument, the drum-set, and also exerts his presence and competitively dominates a solo portion for the recording which displays a natural cultural hierarchy among children. There are children waiting to take turns pretending to play the "keyboard" and though the musicians are independently cycling through and ebb and flow sort of vocal around the rhythmic figures, there are moments of musical dependence. These moments are marked as the children show great pride in their musical creation. You could imagine this interaction with children of any culture.

Amber, this is so sweet! I really enjoyed watching it. This is definitely a great example of socialization through musical play. They played well together which shows teamwork and communication skills. Thanks for sharing!
