World Music Listening Blog Post #4
Topic: Discuss how the creating music strategies in Campbell (2004) relate to your chosen excerpt.
------------------------------------
Title: "The South Wind"
Artists: Joanie Madden
Culture: Ireland
Orchestration: electric chordophones, piano, traditional chordophones, aerophone - tin whistle
Campbell (2004) relates several world music creating strategies that are immediately present in this tune. First and foremost is a sincerity and sensitivity to the emotional cultural context of this tune. Though the content in this particular recording is modernized, it is still much as it was while being passed through generations, often by call and response as Campbell (2004) mentions. It also holds a traditional drone in some portions that accentuates the mournful aura of the piece as well as utilizing an age old motive. The meaning is gently displayed in the melody that sounds the lament and homesick desperation of the Irish as they wish the South wind would blow their ships back to the island rather than allow them to be torn from their homes and their traditions. I cry every time I hear this tune.

Wow, there is so much emotion in this piece. Campbell makes it very clear that when performing another cultures music, or even your own cultures music you should make sure that you give it the time that it deserves. That should be true of any performance. Any time you are performing music it should be done correctly and given the amount of attention and focus that is required. It is important to make sure that we understand the ideas of that culture and the ideas behind their music so that we can present it to the students the way it should be presented; making sure that we do not lead the students in the wrong direction. Wonderful piece of music to listen to!
